I am a big fan of Jim Carrey. I love his style of humor and thank him for many laughs. So when I watched this commencement speech – Full Speech: Jim Carrey’s Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM Graduation -I was prepared for sidesplitting laughter. While I did laugh out loud at times, I witnessed another side of him and was inspired by his profound words.
Carrey spoke about the power of being in the present moment and the role fear and love play in our lives – “the decisions we make in this moment, which are based in either love or fear” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014). He challenges us to ask the universe for what we really want, rather than “choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014).
Carrey shared his life experiences as an offering of proof that we too can ask the universe for what we truly want in this life. He spoke about the risks required to live a fulfilling life, astutely pointing out “you can fail at what you don’t want, so you mine as well take a chance on doing what you love” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014).
“The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014). This comment took my breath and beckoned a moment of self-reflection. I was reminded that my interactions with others are influential and therefore should be purposeful. We are infinitely powerful beings however my experience is that we often forget our strength.
Carrey pointed out our collective desire to belong, yet states “your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014). He challenges us to “risk being seen” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014) in order to live a life motivated by love, not fear.
I stumbled upon this short speech, however I’m certain it was not accidental, as it made an overwhelming impact on my soul and my mind. It caused me to consider what motivates my decisions and compassionately evaluate if I am willing to risk being seen. I hope this inspires you in a unique and equally as profound way.
“You will only ever have two choices, love or fear. Choose love and don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart” (MaharishiUniversity, 2014).
